 The Sword of the Spirit

By George Stroh

May 11, 2020

Take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17)

Quoting from a sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon; "To be a Christian is to be a warrior. The good soldier of Jesus Christ must not expect to find ease in this world; it is a battle-field. Neither must he reckon upon the friendship of the world; for that would be enmity against God. His occupation is war!"

In Ephesians chapter 6, we are instructed as follows; Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10, 11) If we are to stand our ground in this spiritual war against the devil and his followers, we will prevail only if we do so in God's strength and only if we are protected by His spiritual armor.

The last piece of spiritual armor is the Sword of the Spirit, which is our only offensive, as well as, defensive weapon. This is, of course, the word of God; All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. (1 Timothy 3:16)

Satan tries to malign, distort and take the word of God away from Christian warriors. He has many schemes and many accomplices (false teachers) trying to disarm us. Satan knows that he is no match against God and His word. And we need to understand and remember that we are no match for Satan and his crew apart from the Lord's strength and His word. Read it, hear it, study it, meditate upon it, and be constantly nourished by it. The Bible is complete, infallible, sufficient, and our source of authority for Christian faith and practice; The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting. (Psalm 119:160)

Quoting again from C.H Spurgeon; "Therefore, if you are going to this fight, see well to your only weapon. If you are to have no other, take care that you have this always in your hand. Let the Captain's voice ring in your ear, ""TAKE THE SWORD! TAKE THE SWORD!"", and so go forth to the field of battle." Maranatha!
