Entertainment Vs. Edification
August 5, 2017
By George Stroh

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. (2 Timothy 4:3, 4)

Satan has a number of very effective strategies for keeping us biblically ignorant and from paying attention to the Lord and the truth of God's word. One of his most effective strategies is to encourage our preoccupation with entertainment and temporal gratification; Their banquets are accompanied by lyre and harp, by tambourine and flute, and by wine; But they do not pay attention to the deeds of the Lord, nor do they consider the work of His hands. (Isaiah 5:12)

Unfortunately, even most so called evangelical churches now design their worship services and various programs to primarily attract and entertain, at the expense of sound doctrinal teaching and preaching; But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these. (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

There is nothing inherently wrong with some occasional good, wholesome entertainment and recreation. But we ought not let these temporal pleasures crowd out or distract us from focusing on the important eternal truths and spiritual edification contained in God's word. Maranatha!
