The Most Frightening Verse

By George Stroh

August 31, 2020

And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day or night... (Revelation 14:11)

There are a number frightening verses in the bible that warn of coming judgment and eternal hell. Actually, the bible says more about hell or "the lake of fire" than it does about heaven. But this may be the most frightening verse of all that speaks of the constant, eternal, suffering of torment in hell with no hope of rest.

We often hear people say of the dead, "Rest in Peace." The truth is that for unbelievers who die without faith in Jesus, there is no rest; For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge His people." It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God." (Hebrews 10:30, 31)

Someone will say, "My God is a loving God and would never send anyone to an eternal hell of torment." Then your God is not the one and only God of the bible. It is true that God is a God of love; For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life, (John 3:16)

God is indeed a God of love, mercy, grace, and forgiveness. But He is also holy and righteous and will judge and punish all unforgiven sinners; For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

We will each spend eternity in either heaven or hell. I am praying today, as I do everyday, for my family and friends who don't yet know the God of the bible, have not yet repented of their sins, and have not yet trusted in Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior; Brethren, my heart's desire and my prayer to God for them is for their salvation. (Romans 10:1)
