What is Truth?

By George Stroh

Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a King?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" (John 18:37, 38)

On the day that our Lord was crucified, He stood before the Roman Governor of Judea, Pontius Pilate. When Pilate asked that fateful question, "What is truth?", he didn't realize that he was asking the very One who personifies God's truth; Jesus said to Him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. (John 14:6) Not only is Jesus the truth, but the Bible, which is the word of God, is truth. Jesus prayed to His and our heavenly Father; "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth." (John 17:17) In a world that tries to blur the line between truth and lies, we can trust the truth of God's word.

It is popular and politically correct today to say that truth is relative. That everyone's opinion is valid and that no one, including God, has the right to judge another's sincerely held beliefs. Since there is no ultimate truth, then people are free to sin with impunity. The promises and warnings of Scripture are only relative truths and therefore subject to one's own interpretation. But what does God say about the truth of His word; But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (2 Peter 1:20)

God's word is the Truth! So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts. (2 Peter 1:19) Here is the gospel truth: All have sinned. The penalty for sin is death, eternal separation from God in a literal place called hell. Salvation and eternal life in heaven is by faith alone in the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ; And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) Maranatha!
